    Published on

ExxonMobil’s Phil Rietema has successfully defended his title at the 2025 National Long Drive Championship, delivering an electrifying performance to secure his second consecutive win. The event, hosted by the Guyana Golf Association (GGA) in partnership with the National Sports Commission (NSC), took place on Saturday at the Guyana National Park under perfect conditions.

The competition featured Guyana’s top golfers battling for supremacy in both the Long Drive and Straight Drive categories. With a strong Atlantic breeze adding an extra layer of challenge, the tournament attracted participants from across the country and had an international flair, complete with corporate displays, luxury cars, and complimentary refreshments.

Rietema faced stiff competition from seasoned players, including 13-time Guyana Open Champion Avinash Persaud. Persaud electrified the crowd with two massive drives, reaching 318 yards and appearing poised to claim victory. However, Rietema responded with precision and power, adjusting his approach after a 297-yard first drive to deliver a staggering 328-yard shot. Persaud’s final effort fell just one yard short at 327 yards, sealing Rietema’s triumph.

Aleem Hussain, President of the GGA, praised the growing participation of young players and women in the sport. He highlighted the immense support from sponsors and partners that made the event accessible to all. Hussain also expressed optimism about next year’s championship, promising an even bigger and better event.

The success of this year’s tournament underscores golf’s rising popularity in Guyana as the sport continues to gain national recognition and attract top-tier talent. Rietema’s victory solidifies his status as one of Guyana’s premier golfers while inspiring others to aim for excellence in future competitions.
