Golden Jaguars on the Brink of New Head Coach Appointment

    Published on

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) is in the final stages of its search for a new head coach for the national men’s football team, the Golden Jaguars. An official announcement is expected within the next three weeks, as confirmed by GFF President Wayne Forde on Thursday, April 10.

The position became vacant in October 2024 after the departure of Jamaal Shabazz, who had served his fourth tenure as head coach. Since then, Wayne Dover has been managing the team in an interim capacity, guiding them through critical matches, including the CONCACAF Gold Cup preliminary qualifiers. However, with key fixtures looming, including a crucial World Cup qualifier against Nicaragua on June 6, the urgency to appoint a permanent coach has intensified.

Forde revealed that a shortlist of eight candidates is under consideration for the role but withheld their identities. The selection process has been rigorous, with criteria emphasizing a UEFA Pro Licence (or equivalent), at least five years of professional coaching experience with senior national teams, and a proven track record in international competitions. The GFF initially aimed to finalize the appointment by March 2025 but extended the timeline to ensure a thorough evaluation.

The new coach will inherit a team with significant potential but also challenges. Under Shabazz’s leadership, Guyana achieved promotion to League A of the CONCACAF Nations League but faced relegation after struggling against stronger opponents. Interim coach Dover has kept the team competitive but lacks the qualifications required for permanent consideration.

The appointment comes at a pivotal time for Guyana’s football ambitions. With aspirations of qualifying for the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, the federation is seeking a leader capable of elevating the team’s performance on the international stage while fostering player development and tactical growth.

As fans eagerly await the announcement, hopes are high that the new head coach will bring fresh energy and expertise to guide the Golden Jaguars through their upcoming challenges and toward greater success in regional and global competitions.
