Gladiators Claim Bartica’s T20 Crown in Explosive Final

    Published on

The Gladiators have etched their name in history as the inaugural champions of the Bartica Premier League (BPL) T20 Cricket Championship, defeating the Bartica Super Strikers by 21 runs in a thrilling final at the Daag Point Ground on April 1, 2025. The high-octane contest showcased power-hitting, tactical bowling, and moments of brilliance that captivated cricket fans.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Gladiators posted an imposing total of 182 runs in their allotted 15 overs. The match had been reduced from 20 to 15 overs per side due to prior delays. Leading the charge for the Gladiators was Leon Swamy, who delivered an electrifying knock of 48 runs off just 15 balls, smashing seven sixes and a boundary. He was ably supported by Kelvin Orford with a quickfire 34 off 17 balls and Jermaine Dover, who contributed a brisk 28 off 11 deliveries.

Despite their aggressive approach, the Gladiators faced stiff resistance from the Super Strikers’ bowlers. Kevon Stephens stood out with figures of 3-14, while Ashberk Hohenkirk (3-50), Garfield Phillips (2-13), and Christopher Harry (2-44) also chipped in with wickets.

In response, the Bartica Super Strikers mounted a spirited chase but ultimately fell short, finishing at 161-5 in their 15 overs. Garfield Phillips was the standout performer for the Super Strikers, smashing an unbeaten 73 off just 29 balls, including five fours and seven sixes. Christopher Harry added an explosive 30 not out off 14 balls, while Ronaldo Jeffrey contributed 23 off 14 deliveries at the top of the order. However, Gladiators’ bowlers Aston Simmons (3-31) and Marvin Peters (1-23) managed to keep the opposition in check during crucial moments.

Ronaldo Jeffrey’s exceptional performances throughout the tournament earned him several accolades, including Most Valuable Player, Best Youth Player, and Most Runs of the Tournament. He amassed an incredible total of 480 runs across five matches, with scores of 168 not out, 118, and 104 among his highlights.

The BPL’s innovative pitch setup—featuring a concrete batting surface at one end and a mud turf bowling wicket at the other—added a unique dimension to the competition. It tested players’ adaptability and contributed to high-scoring games throughout the tournament.

The Gladiators’ victory not only marks a triumphant end to an exciting tournament but also sets a high standard for future editions of the Bartica Premier League. Fans are already looking forward to what promises to be an even more competitive season next year.
