Today, March 16, 2025, the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) is hosting the highly anticipated 2025 National Blitz Chess Championships at the Pegasus Hotel and Suites’ Exhibition Centre. This event marks a significant return to competitive chess after several years, promising an exciting and fast-paced competition for both seasoned players and newcomers.

    Competition Format and Rules

The tournament will feature an eleven-round Swiss format with a 3-minute time control per player, plus a 2-second increment after the first move. This format is characteristic of blitz chess, known for its rapid pace and strategic intensity. Following the initial rounds, a knockout system will be implemented to determine the ultimate champion, adding an element of unpredictability to the competition.

    Top Contenders

Several top players are expected to vie for the championship title, including Candidate Master Taffin Khan, FIDE Master Anthony Drayton, CM Sachin Pitamber, Junior Champion Ricardo Narine, Kyle Couchman, and Keron Sandiford. These players have consistently demonstrated their skills in previous tournaments, making the competition fiercely competitive.

    Prizes and Incentives

The tournament offers substantial cash prizes totaling $115,000 for the top five finishers. Additionally, participants who place sixth, seventh, or eighth will receive a complimentary one-month membership to the Pegasus Chess Club, providing them with access to a dedicated space for chess enthusiasts.

    Live Streaming and Supervision

To enhance spectator engagement, the top twelve boards will be live-streamed on livechesscloud.com under the supervision of FIDE Arbiter John Lee. This allows chess enthusiasts worldwide to follow the games in real-time, fostering a sense of community and excitement around the event.

    Sponsorship and Venue

The GCF has expressed gratitude to the Guyana Pegasus Hotel and Mr. Brandon Badal for providing the venue and supporting the development of chess in Guyana. Mr. Badal, a chess enthusiast himself, has been instrumental in establishing the Pegasus Chess Club, offering a welcoming environment for players to engage in the sport.

    Conclusion

The 2025 National Blitz Chess Championships represent a significant milestone in Guyana’s chess calendar, marking a return to competitive play after a hiatus. With its fast-paced format and competitive field, the tournament promises to be an exhilarating experience for both participants and spectators. As the GCF continues to promote chess development across the country, events like this highlight the federation’s commitment to nurturing talent and fostering a vibrant chess community in Guyana.
