Youth Football Takes Centre Stage as Tournament Heats Up

The highly anticipated ExxonMobil Under-14 Football Competition resumes today with Round 4 action, promising another day of spirited play and emerging talent from across Guyana. The tournament, now in its sixth year, has become a cornerstone for youth football development, drawing participation from schools in nearly every region.

What to Expect in Round 4

    • Kickoff and Fixtures: Matches begin at 10:00 a.m., featuring a packed schedule of 26 games—13 in the boys’ division and 13 in the girls’ division. The day’s fixtures will see the top 16 teams in both categories vying for a spot in the quarterfinals.
    • Featured Matchups: The girls’ competition opens with Abram Zuil facing St Joseph’s High, followed by Good Hope against Bartica Secondary. In the boys’ division, Bygeval meets Charity Secondary, and Three Mile takes on New Amsterdam Secondary. The day will conclude with a much-anticipated clash between Waramuri Secondary and St Joseph’s High.
    • Tournament Format: The competition began with 56 teams, but after three intense rounds, only 32 teams (16 boys, 16 girls) remain. The knockout format now raises the stakes, with every match a do-or-die encounter.

    Significance for Youth Development

The ExxonMobil U-14 tournament is more than just a football competition—it is a platform for nurturing discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship among young athletes. Organisers and sponsors have highlighted the role of sport in shaping well-rounded students and future leaders, with the Ministry of Education and ExxonMobil reaffirming their commitment to supporting youth empowerment through sport.

    Prizes and Recognition

    • Top Honors: The winning schools in both categories will receive substantial cash prizes for school projects, along with trophies and medals.
    • Individual Awards: Outstanding players will be recognized with special prizes, including football boots, goalkeeper gloves, and school supplies, further motivating participants to excel on and off the field.

    Looking Ahead

With the competition intensifying and the field narrowing, today’s matches are expected to deliver high drama, skillful play, and memorable moments. The ExxonMobil U-14 Football Competition continues to serve as a vital proving ground for Guyana’s next generation of football stars, with scouts and coaches keeping a keen eye on standout performers as the tournament progresses.
