Elite League: GDF Suffers Another Setback; Slingerz and Tigers Secure Wins

    Published on

Defending champions Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Football Club faced yet another setback in the Guyana Football Federation’s Elite League over the weekend, falling 2-1 to Den Amstel FC in a closely contested match at the National Training Centre in Providence.

Den Amstel took an early lead in the 16th minute when Deon Alfred converted a penalty with precision, sending the ball low into the bottom left corner. GDF responded strongly, leveling the score in the 33rd minute with a well-taken goal by Chris Macey. However, the decisive moment came in the second half when Jomal Robinson found the back of the net in the 60th minute, sealing a hard-fought victory for Den Amstel.

The loss marks a challenging start to the season for GDF, who entered as favorites but have struggled to maintain their dominance. The defeat raises questions about their title defense, especially after narrowly edging out Slingerz FC last season in a tight race.

In another match on Saturday evening, Slingerz FC continued their impressive form with a 1-0 win over the Guyana Police Force (GPF) FC. The game remained deadlocked at 0-0 through the first half as both teams displayed solid defensive efforts. The breakthrough came in the 66th minute when Darren Niles scored the match-winning goal for Slingerz, maintaining their unbeaten record this season.

On Sunday, Western Tigers secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Santos FC. After a goalless first half, Tyrie McAllister delivered the decisive strike in the 59th minute to earn his team three crucial points. Meanwhile, Fruta Conquerors defeated Mainstay Goldstar FC 3-1 in an earlier match that saw Dwayne Jones score twice and Dennis Edwards add another goal for Conquerors.

The Elite League continues to showcase intense competition among Guyana’s top football clubs. With GDF facing mounting pressure and teams like Slingerz and Western Tigers gaining momentum, fans can expect more thrilling encounters as the league progresses. The next round of matches is scheduled for this coming weekend at the same venue.
