The highly anticipated 18th edition of the KFC National Schools Basketball Festival is set to tip off this Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), bringing together the nation’s top young basketball talent for a week of spirited competition and school pride.
The tournament will open with the Under-14 category, featuring matchups between Queen’s College and St Stanislaus, followed by Mackenzie High taking on Aroama Secondary. Other opening day fixtures include Skeldon Line Path versus D-UP Academy, and School of the Nations facing Marian Academy. In the Under-18 division, perennial powerhouse Kwakwani Secondary will clash with St Rose’s High, while Skeldon Line Path is scheduled to play St Stanislaus. The day’s action is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
Sponsored by Edward B. Beharry, KFC Guyana, G-Boats Inc., and the National Sports Commission, the festival has become a cornerstone of youth basketball development in Guyana. It provides a vital platform for student-athletes to showcase their skills, foster teamwork, and compete for national recognition.
Adding to the excitement, Sunday evening will also see senior basketball action as the One Guyana Basketball League semifinals continue at the Sports Hall. The Stabroek Eagles, last year’s finalists, will be looking to bounce back after dropping the series opener to the Bounty Colts. Defending champions North Ruimveldt Ravens face a similar challenge, trailing in their semifinal matchup against the Kobras.
The National Schools Basketball Festival has a storied tradition of highlighting emerging stars and promoting the sport at the grassroots level. With schools from across the country vying for top honors, fans can expect a thrilling week of basketball, camaraderie, and sporting excellence at CASH.
