In a notable advancement for skills development and certification in Guyana, the Board of Industrial Training (BIT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, has officially opened its new office and Skills Development & Certification Centre in New Amsterdam, Region Six. The inauguration event took place on Tuesday and was graced by prominent figures, including government officials, regional leaders, and department heads from the BIT.

The ceremony was highlighted by a keynote speech from Joseph Hamilton, the Minister of Labour. He expressed enthusiasm about the impact of the new facility, stating, “I can see evidence of what we are doing, especially with the establishment of this facility. Residents here, including retired individuals, will benefit from the programmes we have and will continue to implement in the region.†Minister Hamilton emphasized the significant changes brought about by government-led training initiatives in Region Six, where over the last four years, 2,571 individuals have received training through 109 programmes, supported by an investment of $185 million. Notably, these initiatives have benefitted 1,410 males and 1,230 females, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunities.

Mr. Richard Maughn, the Chief Executive Officer of BIT, also addressed the audience, sharing insights into the organization’s growth and the recognition of its programmes. He reaffirmed BIT’s dedication to ensuring that its training offerings are accredited and respected both locally and internationally, thereby enhancing the job prospects and educational pathways for trainees.

The gathering also included Mr. David Armogan, Regional Chairman and Chairman of the Board of Industrial Training, along with His Worship Mayor Mr. Wainwright McIntosh, who both expressed their appreciation for the new centre in Berbice.

Other BIT staff members were present at the commissioning ceremony, ready to play vital roles in executing training programmes and certification processes. This modern facility, designed in compliance with Caribbean Vocational Qualifications (CVQs) standards, spans two levels, each covering 2,000 square feet, providing substantial space for training and certification activities.

The launch of the Skills Development & Certification Centre in New Amsterdam signifies a pivotal step in the government’s strategy to decentralize training opportunities and foster regional development.
