Former Minister and PNCR General Secretary Amna Ally Dies

    Published on

Guyana is mourning the loss of Amna Ally, a towering figure in national politics and a stalwart of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), who passed away on Saturday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. She was 77.

Ally, a former Minister of Social Protection and General Secretary of the PNCR, was widely respected for her unwavering commitment to public service, her decades-long parliamentary career, and her significant contributions to both education and politics. Her passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from across the political spectrum, with leaders and colleagues hailing her as a dedicated servant of the nation.

President Irfaan Ali, in a statement, extended condolences on behalf of the government and his family, highlighting Ally’s long and impactful tenure in Parliament, which began in 1985. She held numerous key positions, including Chairperson of the Social Services Committee, and served as Minister of Social Protection from 2015 to 2020. The President also noted her parallel career as an educator, which spanned several decades.

Ally’s service to Guyana was characterized by integrity, patriotism, and a tireless drive to improve the lives of others. She was instrumental in the implementation of the innovative “3 Bs” programme-providing buses, boats, and bicycles for school children-a legacy that continues to benefit communities nationwide.

Her recent resignation from the PNCR in March, following public disagreements with party leadership, underscored her principled approach to politics and her advocacy for women’s rights within the party. Despite internal party disputes, Ally remained a respected figure, known for her ability to foster cordial relations across the political divide.

Former President David Granger described Ally as the “undisputed and untiring motivator” behind key party initiatives and praised her five decades of service, both in and out of government. He emphasized her role in party administration, mobilization, and her cheerful organization of national and religious observances.

The PNCR, in its tribute, said Ally’s legacy would continue to inspire future generations, describing her as a “dedicated and former long-standing member” whose contributions have profoundly shaped the party and the country.

As Guyana reflects on the life and legacy of Amna Ally, her passing marks the end of an era for the nation’s political landscape. She leaves behind a record of service, leadership, and advocacy that will be remembered for years to come.
