Defections and Internal Strife Undermine Norton’s Claims of a ‘Strong Base’

    Published on

Recent waves of high-profile defections and persistent internal criticism have cast doubt over People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) leader Aubrey Norton’s assertions of a robust and unified party base, especially as Guyana approaches the September 1, 2025 General and Regional Elections.

Despite Norton’s repeated insistence that the PNCR’s membership is growing and its structure remains solid, the reality appears less certain. Influential figures—including Dr. Richard Van-West Charles, son-in-law of party founder Forbes Burnham; Member of Parliament Geeta Chandan-Edmond; Region Four Chairman Daniel Seeram; and Regional Vice Chairman Samuel Sandy—have publicly endorsed President Irfaan Ali and the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C). Their departures are widely seen as a significant blow to the party’s credibility and cohesion, with critics arguing that the PNCR is increasingly fractured and losing its appeal among its traditional supporters.

Norton has sought to downplay the impact of these defections, dismissing the departed members as inactive or unproductive, and framing their exits as a sign of desperation from the PPP/C rather than a fundamental weakness within his own party. “Our base is intact. Our structure is strong,” he asserted in recent public statements, while also claiming that the PNCR is attracting new members and is well-prepared for the upcoming elections.

However, the persistent internal strife and the loss of key figures have raised concerns among both supporters and observers. The opposition coalition, which includes the PNCR and its partners, is also facing visible cracks, with some members of the Alliance For Change (AFC) and other groups similarly shifting their support to the PPP/C.

As the election campaign intensifies, the PNCR’s ability to project unity and strength is being tested. While Norton remains confident in the party’s prospects, the mounting defections and ongoing internal conflicts present a starkly different narrative—one that suggests the opposition is struggling to maintain its footing in a rapidly evolving political landscape.
