In a significant step towards modernizing Guyana’s healthcare sector, a comprehensive programme aimed at digitizing the healthcare system was officially launched on March 13, 2025. The initiative, part of the Greater Guyana Initiative, seeks to enhance patient care, build local capacity, and strengthen key components of the health sector through digital solutions.
Background of the Programme
The National Health Information Systems and Technology (HIST) Workforce Development Programme is designed to equip healthcare workers with essential Information and Communication Technology (IT) skills. This strategic investment in the future of healthcare will enable seamless patient care by modernizing the sector with digital solutions. The programme is funded by the US$100 million Greater Guyana Initiative and will be implemented in collaboration with the Mount Sinai Health System based in New York.
Key Objectives
- Enhance Patient Care: By providing healthcare workers with the necessary digital skills, the programme aims to improve the efficiency and quality of patient care across Guyana.
- Build Local Capacity: The initiative will train over 250 health information systems and technology workers to implement, manage, and maintain the national electronic health records system. This will not only enhance local capacity but also create a centre of excellence for HIST professionals.
- Strengthen Healthcare Infrastructure: The programme will support the development of a robust digital infrastructure, ensuring that healthcare services are more accessible and integrated across the country.
Training and Employment Opportunities
The programme offers tuition-free training for individuals across all ten regions of Guyana. Participants will receive stipends during their training and are guaranteed direct employment upon completion. The modular curriculum is designed to accommodate students without prior IT experience, equipping them with the skills needed to contribute to Guyana’s new digital health systems.
Integration with International Partners
Guyana’s healthcare system is set to be digitally linked with international specialty services from leading institutions in the U.S. and India. This integration will allow for the pooling of medical talent on a national platform, ensuring that specialized services are accessible to all, regardless of location or sector.
The launch of the HIST Workforce Development Programme marks a significant milestone in Guyana’s journey towards a modern, integrated healthcare system. By leveraging digital technology and international partnerships, the government aims to provide world-class healthcare services to all Guyanese, bridging the gap between urban and rural areas and positioning Guyana as a major hub for modern healthcare in the Caribbean by 2030.
