The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, observed on February 11, is a UNESCO initiative aimed at promoting equal access and participation of women and girls in the scientific field. This day highlights the importance of gender equality as a key priority for UNESCO, emphasizing that empowering young girls through education and giving them a platform to express their ideas are essential for sustainable development and global peace.

Tisha Vancooten, a resident of Lake Capoey in Cinderella County, Region 2 (Pomeroon-Supenaam), embodies the spirit of this initiative. Her journey into science began during her high school years and blossomed further at the University of Guyana, where she is currently a third-year biotechnology student. Proudly rooted in her Amerindian heritage, Tisha grew up in a natural environment that nurtured her love for fishing and allowed her to embrace her rich cultural traditions through the culinary practices of her ancestors.

Tisha’s path has not been without its challenges. The move from her tranquil home in Region 2 to the vibrant capital of Georgetown presented significant obstacles. This transition was made even harder by the global pandemic, which added an extra layer of difficulty to her already demanding journey. Nevertheless, Tisha’s resilience and determination have propelled her forward, driven by her ambition to become a doctor and to inspire other young women to chase their dreams.

“My ultimate goal is to give back to my community by providing healthcare and support to my people,” Tisha expresses. “Access to quality medical care is limited in many Indigenous areas, and I aspire to be part of the solution.”

As a woman in science, Tisha aims to motivate the next generation, particularly young girls from underrepresented communities, to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). “To young girls who dream of a career in science—never let challenges discourage you. Your background does not define your potential. Stay curious, ask questions, and surround yourself with people who support your dreams. The journey may be tough, but with passion and perseverance, you can achieve anything,” she advises.

As Tisha continues to forge her path, she stands as a beacon of empowerment, demonstrating that women, regardless of their backgrounds, have a rightful place in the scientific community.
