In a concerted effort to enhance the health sector’s capacity to handle diverse health challenges, the Government of Guyana is set to introduce influenza vaccines to its citizens, marking a significant milestone in the country’s healthcare initiatives. Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony made this announcement on Monday during the launch of a collaborative consultation event involving the Health Ministry, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), and the International Health Regulations National Focal Point Committee, aimed at preparing Guyana’s 2024 State Party Self-Assessment Annual Report (SPAR).

Dr. Anthony stated, “This year, we aim to start administering influenza vaccines specifically for healthcare workers and the elderly. We’ve initiated the process and anticipate the arrival of approximately 12,000 vaccine doses shortly. The rollout of this program will begin soon.â€

In addition to the vaccination campaign, the Health Ministry is also focusing on strengthening disease surveillance within the animal population. During the event, Dr. Anthony highlighted the significant advancements made in the country’s surveillance capabilities in recent years, thanks to investments from the Ministry.

He noted, “Over the past three years, we have made substantial improvements in surveillance methods, laboratory enhancements, staff training, and collaborations with other agencies. Just two years ago, we lacked the laboratory capabilities for virus detection, but now we have established the necessary infrastructure to identify various viruses.â€

The Ministry is currently developing a comprehensive surveillance system that encompasses both animal and human health, which Dr. Anthony emphasized is crucial for future pandemic preparedness, given that many viruses can be transmitted from animals to humans.

He elaborated, “Our goal is to create an integrated surveillance system across all facilities. We plan to leverage the existing telemedicine infrastructure, utilizing internet connectivity at our 84 sites to improve our surveillance efforts. This approach will not only focus on human health but will also consider environmental and animal health factors.â€

Dr. Anthony further explained, “Preparing for future pandemics necessitates readiness for potential virus transmission from animals to humans. When such a shift occurs, we must have systems in place to detect any changes swiftly, making integrated surveillance essential.â€

In relation to funding for these initiatives, the Health Minister revealed that the Ministry is addressing several identified weaknesses with support from international organizations, including the World Bank.

He shared, “In 2023, we applied for $15 million from the Pandemic Fund but were not successful. However, in 2024, after enhancing our proposals, we returned to the Pandemic Fund and secured approval. In partnership with the World Bank, we will receive $15 million in grant funding and borrow an additional $7 million. This project is designed to address the deficiencies we identified in our health system.â€
