As the government works towards establishing a top-tier healthcare system in the country, significant emphasis is being placed on delivering comprehensive primary healthcare services to all Guyanese. To support this initiative, four new health centers have been constructed and equipped in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice) over the past three years. Notable among these are the $37 million health center at Esau and Jacob and the Lakeville Health Centre in District Number 10. These facilities provide a range of services, including maternal and child healthcare, family planning, general outpatient services, chronic disease management, home visits, pharmacy services, and school health programs.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the importance of both primary and tertiary care in the region during the inauguration of the Bath Regional Hospital in Region Five. He highlighted the government’s efforts to enhance the local healthcare system, reducing the necessity for residents to travel to Georgetown for medical services. The opening of this modern hospital represents a significant step in Guyana’s pursuit of a world-class healthcare system, as noted by Dr. Anthony. He also acknowledged the transformative leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali in positioning Guyana as a healthcare leader within the Caribbean.
Dr. Anthony remarked, “Your leadership reminds us that real development is not measured by economic growth but in health, safety, and dignity of our people.†Over the years, substantial investments have been made in areas such as digital health, modern hospital infrastructure, training programs, and the availability of medical supplies to address the needs of all Guyanese. New initiatives, including programs focused on diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular health, have also been launched in the region to better support patients.
Last year, Fort Wellington and Mahaicony Hospitals were equipped with two state-of-the-art digital X-ray machines, enhancing their capacity to deliver advanced medical services. Dr. Anthony expressed optimism about the future, stating, “We will ensure that we have healthier families, stronger communities, and we can look forward to a brighter future for Region Five.†(DPI)
