Board Chairman’s Statement
The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) has taken significant steps to address a serious incident involving the delivery of a baby. On Thursday, a senior doctor who had been with the hospital for several years was terminated, and two other senior doctors faced suspension as a result of the situation.
Under the leadership of Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, the GPHC Board of Directors has reiterated its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy regarding inappropriate conduct among staff members. Dr. Ramsammy highlighted the importance of maintaining professional standards and warned that any breaches would lead to severe repercussions.
In his communication, Dr. Ramsammy pointed out that the incident revealed a serious lapse in the responsibilities expected of senior personnel. He praised the hospital management for their prompt and transparent investigation, stating, “The Board insists that where there is evidence of inappropriate behaviour by staff, there will be no tolerance and there will be severe consequences.â€
The GPHC has a long-standing reputation for upholding high operational standards, with most of its healthcare professionals dedicated to delivering compassionate, high-quality care in line with international best practices. Dr. Ramsammy took this opportunity to commend these dedicated staff members who consistently serve the thousands of patients at the hospital.
While the actions taken cannot reverse the distress caused to the affected family, the Board expressed hope that the disciplinary measures would offer some form of resolution. They also extended their appreciation to the family for their cooperation during the investigation, which was crucial in bringing closure to this unfortunate event.
The hospital’s leadership has reaffirmed its dedication to strict professional standards and accountability for all employees, emphasizing that any deviation from these standards will result in decisive disciplinary measures.
