The Government of Guyana has distributed more than 280 Solar Home Systems to rural communities as part of its ongoing efforts to expand access to reliable, renewable energy and improve the quality of life for residents in off-grid areas.
This latest distribution is part of a broader national initiative that has already seen tens of thousands of solar panels delivered to hinterland, riverine, and rural communities across the country. The Solar Home Energy (SHE) project, spearheaded by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA), aims to bridge the energy gap between urban and remote areas by providing households with 160-watt solar photovoltaic systems. Each system is equipped to power LED lamps, a stand fan, and includes a USB port for charging electronic devices-transforming homes that previously relied on kerosene lamps or costly generators.
Residents in communities like Loo Creek, Karasabai, and Rukumuta have described the impact as transformative. With solar-powered lighting, families can now extend productive hours into the night, children are able to study after dark, and households have reduced their reliance on expensive and polluting fossil fuels. Many residents have expressed relief at no longer needing to travel long distances or pay fees to charge their mobile phones, while others have noted significant savings on fuel costs.
The government’s solar programme is part of Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030, which seeks to balance the country’s rapid economic growth with environmental sustainability. Since the inception of the project, over 30,000 solar home systems have been distributed, with an additional 7,000 units planned for delivery in 2025. The initiative is expected to save millions of litres of fuel annually and eliminate thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Officials have emphasized that the distribution of solar panels is not only about providing electricity but also about empowering communities, supporting education, and fostering economic opportunities. The government remains committed to ensuring that every household in unconnected areas will eventually have access to clean, renewable energy-laying the foundation for a more resilient and equitable Guyana.
