On Wednesday, Minister of Education Priya Manickchand marked the beginning of the Cottonfield Secondary School project on the Essequibo Coast by officially turning the sod. This significant initiative will be executed by Builders Hardware, General Supplies, and Construction, with an overall budget of G$1,798,137,760.
The new Cottonfield Secondary School is set to feature modern classrooms, administrative offices, sports facilities, and various essential amenities designed to foster a comprehensive learning environment for students from Cottonfield and its neighboring areas. The anticipated construction timeline spans 18 months, aiming for completion by August 2026. Additionally, the project includes a 12-month defects liability period to rectify any issues that may surface post-completion.
To kick off the project, a mobilisation sum of G$179,813,776 has been allocated for initial activities, which will encompass site preparation and the procurement of necessary materials. During the ceremony, Minister Manickchand underscored the critical role of investing in education as a cornerstone for the nation’s future.
However, despite these advances, there are significant concerns regarding the effectiveness of Guyana’s education system. The country is lagging behind its Latin American and Caribbean counterparts, as evidenced by disappointing outcomes in key assessments. The National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) results remain troubling, pointing to broader issues within the primary education sector. Similarly, low pass rates in the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CXC) exams indicate ongoing challenges at the secondary level. These findings underscore the urgent need for educational reforms to enhance performance and align more closely with regional standards.
