New Amsterdam, Berbice — Nearly 1,800 Berbicians are celebrating a new chapter in their lives after receiving house lots during a major two-day housing drive at the new Overwinning Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice. The event, held from May 30 to 31 at State House in New Amsterdam, was led by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, and Minister within the Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, marking a significant milestone in Guyana’s ambitious housing agenda.

The allocation exercise, part of the government’s ongoing ‘Dream Realised’ initiative, targeted moderate-, middle-, and high-income earners and is the third such event in Region Six for 2025. With this latest distribution, the Ministry of Housing and Water officially surpassed its five-year target of 50,000 house lots allocated since August 2020—a promise made in the government’s manifesto and now fulfilled.

Minister Croal emphasized the government’s commitment to reducing the national backlog of housing applications, particularly in Region Six, where over 4,545 house lots have been distributed since 2020. The new allocations span 815 acres in areas such as Bohemia, Whim, Kilcoy-Chesney, and the planned Mid-Providence/Glasgow zone. Infrastructure works are set to begin soon, ensuring that allottees can access and develop their lands without delay.

Addressing a jubilant crowd, Minister Croal described the event as a “defining point” for the government’s housing programme, noting that the achievement is not just about numbers, but about providing dignity, stability, and opportunity for families across the country. Minister Rodrigues highlighted the youthfulness of the new homeowners, with most recipients between the ages of 21 and 35, and underscored the transformative impact of homeownership on future generations.

The government’s housing drive has been credited with expanding eligibility, reducing application waiting times, and making land ownership accessible to young people and families nationwide. Alongside land allocations, the Ministry is investing in major infrastructure projects, including new roadways to enhance connectivity in the rapidly developing communities.

As site visits for the newly allocated lands are scheduled to begin next week, the government reaffirmed its pledge to continue building Guyana, one family and one community at a time.
