Guyanese now make up 67% of the total workforce in the country’s oil and gas sector, according to recent data released by ExxonMobil Guyana Limited (EMGL). The company specifically highlighted that 1,700 Guyanese are employed offshore, with women accounting for an impressive 53% of the local subsidiary’s workforce.
Expanding the lens to the broader sector, EMGL reported that more than 6,100 Guyanese currently support Stabroek block operations, a figure that represents nearly 70% of the total local oil and gas industry workforce. This rapid increase in local employment is attributed to both direct hiring and the use of local contractors and suppliers.
The company emphasized that diversity and inclusion are core to its operations, with leadership actively fostering inclusive work environments and promoting unique viewpoints. In addition to job creation, EMGL and its partners have invested heavily in local procurement and supplier development, further embedding Guyanese talent and businesses into the sector’s value chain.
Government figures and other reports corroborate these trends, with estimates placing the total number of Guyanese working in the oil and gas sector at approximately 6,500 by mid-2024—a figure that continues to grow as the industry expands and local content initiatives take effect.
