At a recent World Press Freedom Day event, Minister Kwame Mc Coy, with responsibility for Information and Public Affairs, declared that Guyana remains an exception in a world where journalists often face grave threats for their work. Addressing media professionals at a State House brunch hosted by President Irfaan Ali, Mc Coy stated, “In Guyana, we have no such case where our journalists are harmed based on what they report.†He emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom and highlighted that the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has never, and will never, harm journalists for their reporting.
Mc Coy called for responsible journalism and reiterated the administration’s policy of embracing and celebrating press freedom, expressing appreciation for journalists who “walk the beat, tell stories and hold power to account, ethically and professionally.†The minister also urged continued unity in advancing a free, fair, and ethical media landscape as Guyana participates in international media freedom efforts.
The event also saw media professionals recognized for their exemplary contributions, and it was noted that Guyana has improved its standing on the World Press Freedom Index, now ranking 73rd out of 180 countries, up from 77th the previous year. The government’s message was clear: Guyana is committed to a media environment where journalists can operate without fear of harm for reporting the truth.
