GCCI Speaks Out Against Violations of Guyana’s Territorial Integrity at Suriname Business Forum

    Published on

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has unequivocally condemned a recent violation of Guyana’s territorial integrity that took place during the International Business Conference in Suriname. Organized by Action Invest Caribbean Incorporated and Global Event Partners, with the Suriname-Guyana Chamber of Commerce as the host, the conference controversially showcased images that inaccurately represented the New River Triangle as belonging to Suriname.

This long-standing territorial dispute, which spans an area of 15,000 square kilometers, is firmly rejected by Guyana. The GCCI, having participated in the event, has voiced significant concern regarding the inclusion of these misleading images. The Chamber highlighted that the lack of objection to their presence in the conference materials could be viewed as implicit endorsement of Suriname’s claim to a portion of Guyana’s territory, stressing that remaining silent in such circumstances is unacceptable.

Guyana’s Ambassador, Virjanand Depoo, was in attendance at the conference. The issue gained public attention through a report by Stabroek News, which brought the use of these deceptive images to light. In response, the GCCI has urged other Business Support Organizations and agencies involved in the conference to denounce these actions and dissociate from any endeavors that infringe upon Guyana’s national sovereignty.

Furthermore, the Chamber underscored the critical need for business leaders and organizations to vocally oppose any efforts that threaten the nation’s territorial integrity. As a participant in the conference, the GCCI reiterated its dedication to defending Guyana’s sovereignty and safeguarding its national interests.
