AFC Stands Firm: Supporting Terrence Campbell Against Government Pressure

    Published on

The Alliance For Change (AFC) has issued a robust condemnation of the recent attacks on Dr. Terrence Campbell, a member of the Investment Committee of the Natural Resource Fund, by the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government. In a statement released yesterday, the AFC characterized these actions as part of a broader campaign by the current administration to suppress dissent and entrench corruption within Guyana.

Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has been particularly outspoken, accusing Campbell of seeking relevance through his criticisms of the government. Jagdeo has labeled Campbell a “big tax evader,” claiming that he evaded taxes during the tenure of the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) coalition government.

The AFC argues that the latest attack on Campbell is merely one in a long series of efforts by the PPP/C regime to silence opposition voices and misappropriate the nation’s oil wealth. They contend that these governmental actions transcend mere political disagreements, representing a direct assault on democracy and aimed at securing national resources for a privileged few.

Campbell, who has consistently advocated for the responsible management of Guyana’s oil resources, has found himself targeted for opposing what the AFC describes as a corrupt system that diverts public funds for private gain.

According to the AFC, Campbell’s principled stance has made him a target for government officials, particularly Vice President Jagdeo, who they allege has orchestrated a campaign to discredit and intimidate him. The AFC questioned whether Campbell’s real “crime” in the eyes of the PPP/C is his courage to defend Guyana’s oil wealth from the corruption that has become synonymous with the current administration. They emphasized that he dares to advocate for responsible investment of the people’s resources rather than allowing them to be exploited by the Irfaan Ali-Bharrat Jagdeo regime.

In light of this, the AFC highlighted Jagdeo’s relentless campaign against Campbell, which they claim seeks to discredit, threaten, and silence him. The AFC also pointed to recent controversies surrounding the scandal involving 35 acres of valuable state land in Ogle, which have heightened public concern regarding government corruption. They allege that the PPP/C is attempting to divert attention from this issue by embroiling prominent figures, including its leader Nigel Hughes, in the narrative to obscure their own wrongdoing.

“The truth is evident,” the AFC asserted. “While the PPP/C distributes prime real estate to convicted fraudsters and their associates, they strive to vilify those who dare to expose their actions. This is their modus operandi: when cornered, they retaliate; when exposed, they smear others; and when confronted, they attempt to rewrite history.”

The AFC called upon all citizens of Guyana to unite against the corruption and intimidation perpetrated by the current government. “We will not be intimidated by fear. We reject the tyranny of corruption and intimidation,” the party stated. “We stand with Dr. Campbell and all who strive for accountability, advocating for a Guyana free from despotic rule.”

The statement concluded with a resolute call to action: “The battle for our nation’s future has commenced. We shall not retreat, we shall not waver, and we shall emerge victorious.”
