President Ali Launches New Bath Regional Hospital and Announces Nationwide Integrated Laboratory Services

President Dr. Irfaan Ali, on Wednesday, inaugurated the new Bath Regional Hospital located in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), a modern healthcare facility that aims to revolutionize medical services in the region. During the commissioning ceremony, he also unveiled plans to implement integrated laboratory services throughout Guyana, which are designed to enhance access to primary healthcare and promote healthier lifestyles for families.

In his address to attendees, President Ali emphasized the connection between quality healthcare and improved quality of life. “Quality health care is linked to quality life, and quality life involves how we care for our bodies from birth until our pre-determined exit,†he stated.

He elaborated on the government’s initiative to create an accessible national network of laboratories, including mobile containerized facilities intended to bring diagnostic services closer to local communities. “In the coming months and years, you will see significant investment in this initiative. We will be launching a comprehensive lab integration service across the country, similar to the containerized police outposts, but focused on healthcare,†he explained.

The President envisions these facilities as convenient locations where citizens can easily access basic health checks, allowing them to stop in before work to check indicators like blood sugar levels. “We want these facilities to enhance family healthcare and support healthy living,†he added.

Region Five has been identified as a pilot area for this initiative due to its demographic characteristics. It will serve as a model for a comprehensive family health strategy as the government continues to invest in people-centered care.

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the advanced features of the new Bath Regional Hospital, which he believes will greatly enhance health outcomes in the region. “This hospital will change lives. We have three state-of-the-art operating theatres equipped for both elective and emergency surgeries,†he stated.

The facility boasts 75 inpatient beds, an emergency department, medical imaging capabilities including a CT scanner, a modern pharmacy, a dialysis unit, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and a maternal care unit. Dr. Anthony noted that this new hospital represents a significant upgrade from the region’s previous healthcare infrastructure.

In addition to the hospital, four new health centers have been established and fully equipped in the region, along with public health programs targeting chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

During his speech, Dr. Anthony also underscored the importance of compassionate care, urging healthcare workers to treat patients with empathy and understanding. “While we have built a beautiful facility, the strength of this institution lies in the staff delivering the services,†he remarked. “Patients come to us when they are most vulnerable, and it is crucial that we treat them with compassion to facilitate their recovery.â€

The commissioning of the Bath Regional Hospital marks a significant achievement in the government’s broader strategy to enhance healthcare accessibility, community well-being, and quality of care in Guyana. This facility is the third of six new health establishments that are part of a larger initiative by the Government of Guyana, following the recent commissioning of the Enmore and Diamond regional hospitals. The construction of these facilities has been carried out in collaboration with China’s Sinopharm International and CAMCE.
