ExxonMobil Gears Up for Significant Natural Gas Field Expansion

    Published on

ExxonMobil Guyana, the operator in the Stabroek Block, is gearing up to extract at least one billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, in addition to 250 barrels per day of crude oil from the Longtail project. President Alistair Routledge made this announcement at a news conference on Wednesday.

“This gas development project is significant, with expected handling capacity potentially exceeding one billion cubic feet per day,†Routledge stated. Although he refrained from disclosing specific figures regarding the volume of non-associated gas at Longtail ahead of the upcoming Energy Conference & Supply Chain Expo 2025, he mentioned that the field development plan (FDP) is set to be submitted in 2026, which will include further details.

When asked about the potential uses for the gas from Longtail, Routledge stated that it would be utilized “to the best benefit of the country.†He also confirmed that ExxonMobil has already submitted its request for environmental authorization to Guyana’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Looking forward, Routledge indicated that production from the Hammerhead project is anticipated to range between 130,000 to 180,000 barrels per day, with additional details to be included in its FDP.

During the conference, Routledge noted that ExxonMobil is still awaiting approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the EPA regarding plans to optimize production to 260,000 or 265,000 barrels per day from the Payara and Liza 2 wells.

He explained that a team recently inspected the floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessels to ensure safety measures are in place should the green light be granted for increased outputs beyond the vessels’ nameplate capacities. “We conducted thorough safety analyses and made necessary adjustments to the facilities. There is additional capacity available, particularly on the Prosperity vessel,†he added.
