GDF Pilot Severely Injured in Turks and Caicos Plane Crash

    Published on

A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) pilot, Captain Dwight Bonus, is receiving overseas medical treatment after being severely injured in a plane crash Tuesday in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

The incident occurred as Captain Bonus, a trained helicopter pilot, was on personal vacation. According to GDF statements, Bonus was involved in a single-engine aircraft accident near Providenciales. After the crash, he was medically evacuated and has since been air-dashed to the Dominican Republic for advanced care. Preliminary reports indicate his condition is currently stable.

The Miami Herald reported that around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday, two people aboard a Cessna 210 took off from North Perry Airport in Broward County, Florida, heading for Howard Hamilton International Airport in Turks and Caicos. The aircraft crashed while approaching the international airport, prompting an immediate response from local emergency services. While one passenger was pronounced dead shortly after the accident, Captain Bonus survived and is under ongoing medical supervision.

The Turks and Caicos Islands Airports Authority has confirmed the incident and, out of respect for the families, extended condolences to those affected. The owner of the aircraft was identified as Mob Aviation USA LLC, of Kissimmee, Florida. An official investigation into the circumstances of the crash is being conducted by the local National Security Council and Civil Aviation Authority.

In a statement, the GDF expressed support for Captain Bonus and his family, assuring the public that they are closely monitoring the situation and are in contact with relevant authorities. The international airport in Providenciales was briefly shut down but has since reopened as investigations continue.

As the probe unfolds, the GDF and broader Guyanese community are rallying behind Captain Bonus, wishing him a full and swift recovery after this tragic ordeal.
