President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has unveiled plans for a sweeping redevelopment of the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling waterfront, signaling a new chapter in the government’s drive to modernize infrastructure and stimulate regional growth.
Announced during a community outreach with residents of Crane, West Coast Demerara, the ambitious project will transform the historic waterfront into a modern, business-friendly hub. Vendors and traders operating near the Stelling are expected to benefit significantly, as the redevelopment will introduce state-of-the-art facilities, a boardwalk, restaurants, and entertainment venues—all designed to create a vibrant commercial district.
“As soon as we get past September, we want to commence working on a modern waterfront development at the Vreed-en-Hoop Stelling,†President Ali told residents. “A modern waterfront development that will ensure those who are selling there are selling in a state-of-the-art, high-value area with a boardwalk, restaurants, entertainment—everything. A massive commercial waterfront at Vreed-en-Hoop.â€
The President emphasized the strategic importance of the Stelling area to the region’s economic activity and transportation network. The planned transformation is expected to enhance both the functionality and visual appeal of the waterfront, making it a focal point for commerce and community life.
This initiative builds on a wave of major investments in the area, including the recently commissioned US$300 million Vreed-en-Hoop shore base facility, which has already begun to reshape the region’s maritime and transport sector. The government is also working on architectural designs for a new, iconic port facility at the site, further cementing Vreed-en-Hoop’s role as a key node in Guyana’s transportation and logistics network.
With construction set to begin later this year, the Vreed-en-Hoop waterfront redevelopment is poised to drive economic growth, create jobs, and elevate the standard of living for residents and businesses in Region Three. The project is part of a broader vision to transform Guyana’s port spaces and waterfronts into modern, efficient, and attractive centers of activity, supporting the country’s ongoing development and regional ambitions.
