8% Salary Hike for Public Servants to Be Paid Before September

    Published on

Public servants across Guyana are set to receive an 8% salary increase, with the government confirming that the retroactive payments will be disbursed before the end of August.

The announcement was made on Friday by Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh, who stated that the salary hike will be retroactive to January 2025 and will benefit all central government employees, including teachers, healthcare workers, and members of the disciplined services. The move is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of public sector workers and supporting families amid rising living costs.

According to Minister Singh, the salary adjustments will be reflected in the July payroll, with all retroactive amounts paid in a lump sum before September. “This increase is a recognition of the hard work and dedication of our public servants, and a demonstration of our government’s commitment to ensuring they are fairly compensated,†Singh said.

The 8% hike comes as part of a broader package of measures aimed at strengthening the public service, including planned investments in training, improved working conditions, and expanded benefits.

Public servants have welcomed the news, with union representatives noting that while the increase is appreciated, continued dialogue is needed to address other outstanding issues such as pension reform and allowances.

The government has assured workers that it remains open to further discussions and is committed to ongoing engagement with unions and staff associations to ensure the needs of public servants are met.

The salary increase is expected to provide a timely boost for thousands of families ahead of the new school year and the busy holiday season, injecting additional spending power into the economy and supporting national development goals.
