A 24-year-old gold miner has been remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of Rayon Lall, a 23-year-old truck porter, at Port Kaituma, North West District.
The accused, Mark Junior George, also known as ‘Killa’, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Port Kaituma Magistrate’s Court via Zoom. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was ordered to remain in custody until September 11, 2025.
The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of June 22 at the Port Kaituma waterfront. According to police reports, Lall was liming with a friend outside a club when an altercation broke out with George. During the confrontation, Lall was stabbed in the chest. He was rushed to the Port Kaituma Police Station by a fellow porter, Ewart Mingo, before being escorted to the Port Kaituma Hospital for medical attention. Despite efforts to save him, Lall succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Police arrested George later that day at Train Line, Port Kaituma. He was reportedly still wearing the same clothes from the time of the incident. During questioning, George claimed that Lall had “violated†him, a statement he made in response to the police about the motive for the stabbing.
Investigations revealed that George had previously served a three-year sentence for a narcotics offence. The case has drawn concern in the Port Kaituma community, with residents expressing shock over the violent nature of the crime.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities prepare for the next court hearing in September.
