Bartica Man Remanded on Narcotics Charge

    Published on

A Bartica resident has been remanded to prison after appearing in court on a narcotics possession charge, following a police operation that led to the discovery of a significant quantity of illegal drugs.

The accused, 29-year-old Mark Anthony Williams of Fourth Avenue, Bartica, was brought before Magistrate Crystal Lambert at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. He was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, a serious offence under Guyana’s anti-narcotics legislation.

According to police reports, Williams was apprehended during a targeted operation last weekend, when law enforcement officers found several parcels of cannabis concealed in his home. The total weight of the seized drugs was reported to be just over two kilograms.

Williams pleaded not guilty to the charge. However, given the gravity of the offence and the quantity of narcotics involved, Magistrate Lambert denied bail and ordered that he be remanded to prison until his next court appearance, scheduled for July 10, 2025.

The case has highlighted ongoing efforts by law enforcement to crack down on the illegal drug trade in Bartica and surrounding regions. Police have reiterated their commitment to pursuing all leads and bringing those involved in narcotics trafficking to justice.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone with information about drug-related activities to come forward and assist in the fight against narcotics in the community.
