A 24-year-old construction worker is in police custody after being caught with over 1.4 kilograms of marijuana during a routine stop-and-search operation along the Annai-Lethem Trail.
Drug Bust on the Trail
The incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday when officers from the Lethem Police Station, acting on intelligence, intercepted a Lethem-bound minibus (registration BAD 6117) carrying six passengers — one Guyanese woman and five men, four of whom were Brazilian nationals and one Guyanese.
Upon receiving information that illegal items might be on board, police notified the driver and passengers of their intention to search the vehicle. The passengers requested that the search be conducted at the Lethem Police Station due to fatigue and the intense heat on the trail. The minibus was then escorted to the station by detectives.
Discovery and Arrest
At the station, passengers retrieved their belongings for inspection. During the search, officers discovered three plastic-wrapped parcels concealed in a blue and grey haversack belonging to Sedney Aubrey Johnson, also known as “Cooliebai,†a construction worker from Hope Estate, East Coast Demerara. The parcels contained leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.
The suspected narcotics were weighed and amounted to 1,478 grams (approximately 1.5 kilograms). Johnson was cautioned, arrested, and remains in custody as investigations continue.
Ongoing Investigations
Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing and have reiterated their commitment to clamping down on drug trafficking activities along interior routes. The bust highlights the continued vigilance of law enforcement in intercepting illegal narcotics destined for Guyana’s hinterland communities.
