In a significant move to strengthen the mining sector and uplift local livelihoods, the government has rolled out a new initiative to equip miners in Region Seven with essential tools and resources. The effort is designed to address longstanding challenges faced by small- and medium-scale miners, ensuring they have the means to operate more efficiently and sustainably.

The latest boost comes in the wake of a highly successful mining blocks lottery held at the Bartica Community Centre, where the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) distributed medium-scale mining properties across four key districts: Potaro, Mazaruni, Cuyuni, and the Northwest. The event drew an impressive turnout from across the mining community, reflecting the sector’s vital role in the regional economy.

Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat, speaking at the event, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting Guyanese miners. “Mining is here to stay and has the full support of the government,” he stated, emphasizing that the allocation of new mining properties is part of a broader strategy to empower local miners and stimulate economic growth.

A total of 150 mining blocks were awarded from 608 applications, providing new opportunities for miners who have long sought access to productive lands. The initiative follows a similar exercise in Karouni, where 82 small miners were previously allocated mining areas—many of whom have already commenced operations and are seeing positive results.

The government has also assured that every effort was made to ensure the newly allocated blocks possess strong mineral potential, as well as access to water and necessary infrastructure. These factors are critical for promoting successful and sustainable mining activities.

Stakeholders from the Guyana Gold & Diamond Miners Association, the Guyana Women Miners Organization, and the Small Miners Association have all been credited for their collaboration and support, which has contributed to the initiative’s success.

Looking ahead, officials have committed to holding additional lotteries in the coming months, expanding access to mining areas for even more Guyanese miners. The government’s ongoing support underscores its vision of fostering inclusive economic development and improving livelihoods in mining communities throughout Region Seven.
