GS Jagdeo Reaffirms Commitment to Youth Development

    Published on

General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to the empowerment and development of Guyana’s youth, highlighting a series of ongoing and new initiatives aimed at equipping young people with the skills and opportunities needed to thrive in a rapidly changing society.

Speaking at a recent youth forum, Dr. Jagdeo emphasized that youth development remains a central pillar of the national agenda. He pointed to the government’s significant investments in education, skills training, entrepreneurship, and cultural programmes as evidence of this commitment.

The 2025 national budget reflects this priority, with $3.6 billion allocated for the development of culture, arts, and youth programmes—a substantial increase from the previous year. This funding supports a wide range of initiatives, including the expansion of the President’s Youth Arm Republic of Guyana (PYARG) programme, which has already engaged more than 11,000 young people. Additionally, 66 hubs across the country are providing training in robotics and coding, benefiting over 5,300 youths and supporting advanced trainees in technology fields.

Dr. Jagdeo also highlighted the launch of the Youth Advisory Council, which ensures that young people are actively involved in shaping national policies and decisions. The government has earmarked $75 million for the council’s activities in 2025, reinforcing its role as a platform for youth voices.

Beyond technical skills, the government is investing in creative industries, with new recording studios and cultural spaces designed to nurture artistic talent. These efforts are complemented by targeted programmes for at-risk and marginalized youth, including entrepreneurship training and leadership development, ensuring inclusivity and broad access to opportunities.

Jagdeo reaffirmed that these investments are not just about immediate economic benefits, but about building a generation of leaders and innovators who will drive Guyana’s growth and development in the years ahead. He called on young people to take full advantage of these opportunities, underscoring the administration’s belief in their potential to shape a brighter future for the nation.
