Two East Coast Demerara men have been sentenced to prison in separate larceny-related cases, marking the latest convictions in a crackdown on property crimes in the region.
In the first case, Rawl Success, a 27-year-old security guard from Beterverwagting Sideline Dam, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to stealing a cement mixer valued at G$450,000 from Quincy Kendall. The theft occurred on June 3, and Success was swiftly arrested. He appeared before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted to the charge of simple larceny and received his 24-month sentence.
In the second matter, Ryan Sookdeo, locally known as ‘Scarface,’ a 21-year-old fisherman from Lusignan, was sentenced to three years behind bars after pleading guilty to a break-and-enter-and-larceny charge. Sookdeo unlawfully entered the Non-Pariel home of Samantha Jairam on June 1 and removed several items. The charge was laid by ranks at the Vigilance Police Station, and Sookdeo appeared before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, where he admitted to the offence and was sentenced accordingly.
Both cases underscore the judiciary’s firm stance on property crimes and the importance of swift justice in deterring criminal activity. The sentences reflect the seriousness with which the courts treat offenses that threaten the safety and security of residents.
