Police Seize Ganja, Cash During Plaisance Operation; Suspect Flees Scene

    Published on

In a decisive operation on Wednesday afternoon, police officers swooped down on a residence in Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, uncovering a stash of suspected ganja and a significant sum of cash, even as the prime suspect managed to evade arrest.

The operation, which took place between 3:00 and 4:00 p.m. at Lot 18 Victoria Road, was launched following intelligence reports about possible illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and narcotics. Led by Superintendent Dufu, the police team arrived at the property and immediately spotted a man of African descent, dressed only in green trunks, fleeing the premises. Despite a rapid pursuit, the suspect escaped and remains at large.

A thorough search of the house yielded a yellow plastic bag containing ‘fronto’—a type of tobacco commonly linked to marijuana use—along with several transparent ziplock bags. Officers also discovered a black plastic bag holding a bulky parcel filled with leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

In addition to the narcotics, police recovered a stash of cash in mixed denominations, including Guyanese notes of $5,000, $2,000, $1,000, $500, $100, and $20, as well as two US$50 bills and one US$20 bill. The total value of the seized cash was calculated at $113,500.

The suspected cannabis, weighing 304 grams, along with the cash and other items, was transported to the Sparendaam Police Station for further processing. All evidence has been lodged as the investigation continues.

Police are actively searching for the unidentified suspect and have urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward. The operation underscores the force’s ongoing commitment to tackling narcotics-related crimes and maintaining public safety in the region.
