Drone Technology and Logistics Overhaul Set to Boost GuySuCo Crop Production

    Published on

The Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo) is embarking on a major modernization drive, leveraging drone technology and overhauling its logistics to revitalize sugar production and meet ambitious targets for 2025.

    Embracing Precision Agriculture

GuySuCo has initiated the use of drone technology as part of a broader shift toward precision farming. Drones equipped with multispectral cameras are being deployed for high-resolution imaging of sugarcane fields, enabling detailed, on-demand crop assessments. This allows for early detection of issues such as pest infestations, nutrient deficiencies, and weed control challenges—problems that have historically hampered yields. Drones also facilitate targeted application of fertilizers and pesticides, reducing chemical use and minimizing environmental impact.

Beyond drones, GuySuCo is integrating Internet of Things (IoT) sensors and advanced weather monitoring systems. These tools provide real-time data on soil moisture, pH, temperature, and humidity, supporting data-driven decisions for irrigation and crop management. The adoption of variable-rate irrigation and AI-powered advisory systems further optimizes resource allocation, resulting in healthier crops and improved efficiency.

    Logistics Overhaul and Mechanization

Mechanization is another pillar of GuySuCo’s transformation. The corporation has invested heavily in new equipment, including harvesters, billet harvesters, and punt dumpers, to automate cane cutting and loading. This shift is crucial as the industry faces an ongoing decline in available field labor, with estimates suggesting a 5% workforce reduction over the next decade. Mechanized operations not only address labor shortages but also enhance productivity and reduce operational costs.

Logistics upgrades are underway across GuySuCo’s estates, with the construction of all-weather roads and the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure. These improvements ensure timely transport of harvested cane to factories, minimizing losses and supporting consistent production cycles.

    Early Results and Future Outlook

The initial impacts of these technological and logistical upgrades are promising. Precision farming techniques have already demonstrated yield improvements, reduced water and fertilizer usage, and lower production costs in pilot projects. The government’s investment—over $45 billion since 2020—has enabled the recapitalization of the sector, with 40% of estates now automated.

Technical expertise from international partners, including Cuba and India, is also contributing to field management, agro-management, and crop management improvements. With these combined efforts, GuySuCo is poised to reverse recent production declines and achieve its target of 101,000 tonnes of sugar in 2025.

A New Era for Guyana’s Sugar Industry

As GuySuCo accelerates its modernization, the integration of drone technology and a comprehensive logistics overhaul signal a new era for Guyana’s sugar industry. The focus on innovation, efficiency, and sustainability is expected to restore the sector’s vitality and secure its place as a cornerstone of the nation’s economy.
