The much-anticipated 2025 edition of the ‘One Guyana’ King and Queen of the Sand Football championships is now set to ignite on Independence Day, following a weather-related postponement earlier this month. The tournament will take place at the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Linden office ground, promising a vibrant celebration of sport and national pride.
The competition, renowned for its fierce rivalry and festive atmosphere, will feature 20 male teams and eight female teams vying for top honors over the coming weeks. Teams will compete in group stages, with the top two from each group advancing to the next round and ultimately the final four. Defending champions Speightland will look to retain their Queen of the Sand title, while the King of the Sand crown is up for grabs as last year’s champions, DC Ballers, are not in contention.
The opening day will see a packed schedule, beginning with a marquee match-up in the queen’s division between Iconic Strikers and Rockstone at 5:30 p.m., followed by Avocado Ballers versus Hururu at 7:00 p.m. The men’s competition will commence with Team Mineral facing Swan FC at 8:10 p.m., and continue with UDK Victors against Lil Ballers at 9:00 p.m. The evening’s main supporting match will pit Rockstone against Hardball Management, with the feature clash between HH Ballers and Avocado closing out the night.
Adding to the spectacle, a colorful march past featuring all participating teams will take place, highlighting the unity and diversity at the heart of the ‘One Guyana’ initiative. Over $4 million in cash, trophies, and other incentives are at stake, raising the competitive stakes for all involved.
The action will continue on subsequent evenings at the same venue, with both established and emerging teams eager to showcase their skills and claim a share of the spotlight. The groupings feature a mix of seasoned contenders and ambitious newcomers, ensuring a dynamic and unpredictable tournament.
As Guyana celebrates its 59th Independence anniversary, the ‘One Guyana’ King and Queen of the Sand Football championships offer not just sporting excitement, but also a powerful symbol of national unity and community spirit.
