Guyana’s LGBTQIA+ community is expressing cautious optimism as Pope Leo XIV assumes the papacy, following the legacy of Pope Francis, who was noted for his more inclusive and compassionate approach toward LGBTQIA+ individuals and families within the Catholic Church.
Local advocates and members of Guyana’s LGBTQIA+ movement have welcomed the new pontiff with hope that he will continue, and perhaps expand, the path of acceptance and dialogue initiated by his predecessor. Pope Francis made global headlines for his calls for respect, dignity, and pastoral care for LGBTQIA+ people, as well as his support for civil unions and his outreach to marginalized communities.
“We are watching closely and hoping that Pope Leo XIV will uphold the spirit of openness that Pope Francis brought to the Church,†said a spokesperson for the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) Guyana. “The world’s LGBTQIA+ Catholics and their families have found hope in the Church’s recent steps toward compassion and inclusion, and we pray that this progress will not only be maintained but also deepened.â€
Under Pope Francis, the Vatican made significant, though sometimes controversial, moves toward recognizing the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ persons, including the historic acknowledgment of same-sex civil unions and the call for families to welcome LGBTQIA+ members with love and understanding.
In Guyana, where religious perspectives often shape social attitudes, the Catholic Church’s stance has a profound impact. Many LGBTQIA+ Guyanese hope that the new Pope will use his global influence to encourage greater acceptance, reduce stigma, and promote equality both within the Church and in broader society.
Faith leaders and activists agree that continued dialogue and education are key. “We urge Pope Leo XIV to listen to the voices of LGBTQIA+ Catholics and to champion a Church that is truly welcoming for all,†said one local Catholic ally.
As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, Guyana’s LGBTQIA+ community remains hopeful that the journey toward acceptance, understanding, and human dignity—so boldly advanced by Pope Francis—will continue to move forward.
