Local advocates and members of Guyana’s LGBTQIA+ movement have welcomed the new pontiff with hope that he will continue, and perhaps expand, the path of acceptance and dialogue initiated by his predecessor. “We are watching closely and hoping that Pope Leo XIV will uphold the spirit of openness that Pope Francis brought to the Church,” said a spokesperson for the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) Guyana. “The world’s LGBTQIA+ Catholics and their families have found hope in the Church’s recent steps toward compassion and inclusion, and we pray that this progress will not only be maintained but also deepened.”

Under Pope Francis, the Vatican made significant, though sometimes controversial, moves toward recognizing the rights and dignity of LGBTQIA+ persons, including the historic acknowledgment of same-sex civil unions and the call for families to welcome LGBTQIA+ members with love and understanding.
