Guyana, US Upgrade Fingerprint ID System to Strengthen Border Security

    Published on

Guyana’s border security and crime-fighting capabilities are set for a significant boost following the upgrade of its fingerprint identification system, a move made possible through collaboration with the United States. The enhanced biometric system, announced by the US Embassy in Guyana, is designed to strengthen border controls, support counter-terrorism efforts, and modernize the country’s approach to law enforcement.

The upgraded system will go beyond traditional fingerprint scans, incorporating palmprints, facial recognition, and iris scans. This comprehensive approach will provide Guyanese authorities with advanced tools to accurately identify individuals, detect potential threats, and share data with international partners. The initiative is part of a broader effort to establish a robust biometric record exchange program between the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), granting local law enforcement access to the FBI’s extensive criminal and counter-terrorism databases.

The project is also linked to ongoing training partnerships, including a Memorandum of Understanding with the New York City Police Department (NYPD), which will see Guyanese officers receive specialized training in areas such as homicide investigation, gender-based violence response, and community policing. These initiatives are designed to transform the GPF and ensure that officers are equipped to handle complex and evolving security challenges.

Government officials have highlighted that the upgraded biometric system will play a critical role in monitoring who enters and exits the country, flagging discrepancies, and ensuring that individuals who overstay visas or attempt to bypass immigration controls are quickly identified. The system will also support Guyana’s broader digital transformation agenda, which includes the rollout of biometric ID cards for citizens by 2026 and the installation of electronic gates at major entry points.

With these advancements, Guyana is positioning itself as a regional leader in border security and digital governance, ensuring that its borders remain secure while facilitating legitimate travel and commerce. The partnership with the United States underscores a shared commitment to safety, security, and the modernization of law enforcement infrastructure.
