The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has intensified its crackdown on illegal drug and firearm trafficking with the recent seizure of a firearm, ammunition, and eight parcels of cannabis during a targeted operation in Georgetown.
Acting on intelligence, CANU ranks conducted a raid at a residence in East Ruimveldt, where they uncovered 1.2 kilograms of cannabis, a black CANiK 9mm pistol, and a magazine loaded with six live rounds. The operation led to the arrest of Jamol Johnson, who was found at the premises at the time of the search.
Johnson was subsequently charged and appeared before the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court, where he pleaded not guilty to possession of 1.278 kilograms of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He was refused bail and remanded to prison as investigations continue.
This latest bust underscores CANU’s ongoing commitment to disrupting the operations of drug traffickers and illegal arms dealers operating within Guyana. The agency has ramped up its enforcement activities in recent months, seizing significant quantities of narcotics, firearms, and ammunition in a series of coordinated raids.
Officials have reiterated their resolve to pursue all leads and bring those involved in the illegal drug and arms trade to justice, emphasizing that such efforts are crucial to ensuring public safety and national security. The operation serves as a warning to criminal networks that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and will continue to act decisively against those who threaten the country’s wellbeing.
