President Ali Vows Unyielding Protection of Guyana’s Sovereignty

    Published on

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has issued a resolute pledge to defend Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid escalating tensions with Venezuela, declaring that the protection of the nation’s borders is a sacred duty for every citizen and not a matter of political convenience.

In a strongly worded statement, President Ali condemned what he described as Venezuela’s “parade of arrogance and consistent disregard for international law,” referencing recent armed attacks on Guyana Defence Force (GDF) troops along the Cuyuni River. He emphasized that such provocations have no place in a democracy or a peaceful region and warned that any breach of Guyana’s laws by Venezuelans residing in the country would have legal consequences.

“The defence of Guyana is a patriotic responsibility, not an option for patriots, a convenience, or political tool. It is a duty, a national honour, and the highest level of dignity for any citizen,” President Ali declared. He called upon all Guyanese, especially those living in border regions, to stand united, celebrate their heritage, and display national pride by flying the golden arrowhead high.

The President’s remarks come as Venezuela continues to press its claim to Guyana’s Essequibo region, a dispute currently before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Guyana has consistently rejected Venezuela’s claims and has sought the protection of the ICJ, which has issued orders prohibiting Venezuela from taking actions that would alter the status quo in the disputed territory. The government has also called on Venezuela to comply fully with the ICJ’s legally binding orders and to respect Guyana’s territorial integrity.

Chief of Defence Staff Brigadier Omar Khan reassured the nation that the GDF remains fully mobilized and prepared to respond to any threat, with increased patrols and heightened alertness along the border. No serious injuries were reported in the recent attacks, but the incidents have prompted renewed vigilance and strengthened security measures.

President Ali also reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to peace, the rule of law, and the pursuit of diplomatic solutions, but made clear that the government will not tolerate threats to its territorial integrity. He underscored the support of international partners, including the United States and the Commonwealth, who have voiced strong backing for Guyana’s position.

As the dispute continues to unfold, President Ali’s message to the nation is one of unity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to the defence of Guyana’s sovereignty. “You have nothing to fear. You are living in what is our sovereign space, and we are going to protect and ensure that our sovereign space is respected by all,” he assured citizens.
