A family in Tain, Corentyne, is counting their losses after an early morning fire tore through their property, destroying a garage and a vehicle while inflicting significant damage to their home. The blaze, which broke out around 3:00 a.m. on Friday, sent shockwaves through the quiet community and prompted a swift response from local firefighters.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started in the garage area, quickly engulfing a parked vehicle and spreading to the ground floor of the house. Thick plumes of smoke and the glow of flames alerted neighbors, who rushed to the scene to offer assistance and call the fire service.
Firefighters from the Guyana Fire Service arrived within minutes and managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the upper floor of the house and neighboring properties. Despite their efforts, the garage was completely gutted, and the family’s vehicle was reduced to a charred shell. The ground floor of the house sustained heavy smoke and water damage, rendering several rooms uninhabitable.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire may have been sparked by a malfunctioning lithium battery that was charging in the garage at the time. Fire officials are continuing their probe to determine the exact cause and have urged residents to exercise caution when charging electronic devices and to ensure that fire safety measures are in place.
The affected family, though shaken, expressed gratitude that no one was injured in the incident. “We lost a lot, but we are thankful to be alive and that the fire didn’t take the whole house,†said one family member.
Community members have since rallied around the family, offering support and assistance as they begin the process of recovery. The incident has also served as a stark reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for vigilance, especially as the use of electronic devices and batteries becomes more common in households.
The Guyana Fire Service is expected to release a full report on the incident in the coming days. Meanwhile, the family is making arrangements for temporary accommodation and assessing the full extent of their losses.
