As the $192 million Railway Embankment Expansion project enters its final stages, Public Works Minister Juan Edghill is calling on the remaining residents and business owners along the corridor to complete their relocation, ensuring the timely delivery of one of Guyana’s most ambitious road infrastructure upgrades.
The project, funded through a concessional loan agreement with the People’s Republic of China and executed by China Railway First Group Co. Limited, will transform the current two-lane embankment from Sheriff Street to Orange Nassau into a modern four-lane roadway. This expansion is a critical component of the broader East Coast Demerara (ECD) Road Project (Phase II), which also includes the construction of 48 bridges, 22 culverts, and a new bridge across the Hope Canal.
With a revised completion deadline set for October 31, 2025, the Ministry of Public Works reports that the project is 44% complete. Key milestones include significant progress on asphalt works, sand filling, bridge and culvert construction, and utility relocation. The expansion is designed to alleviate chronic traffic congestion, improve commute times, and support economic growth along the East Coast corridor.
Relocation efforts have been ongoing for months, with over 100 residents and business owners-especially vendors in areas like Plaisance-already moving to designated spaces to accommodate construction. Minister Edghill has emphasized that cooperation from the remaining few is crucial for the project’s completion and for minimizing disruptions to the community.
Residents have been briefed on security measures, detours, and alternative access routes during construction, and the Guyana Police Force has been actively engaged to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow. The government continues to highlight the long-term benefits of the project, including improved accessibility, increased capacity for containerized goods movement, and the potential for new industrial and job-creation opportunities along the upgraded corridor.
As the finish line approaches, authorities are urging all affected parties to work together to realize the full benefits of this transformative infrastructure investment.
