Fire Investigation into Double Day Hotel Still Ongoing After Deadly Unrest

    Published on

The investigation into the fire that destroyed the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen remains ongoing, with authorities yet to determine the official cause. The blaze erupted on April 24, just hours after the body of 11-year-old Adriana Younge was discovered in the hotel’s swimming pool-a tragedy that sparked widespread outrage and unrest in the community.

According to Fire Chief Gregory Wickham, a meeting with investigators is being held to finalize the findings, and a public statement will be issued once the probe concludes. The Guyana Fire Service has confirmed that both the hotel and the nearby home of its proprietor, Bhojnarine Bhola, were set alight that morning, but has not yet released details about how the fires started.

The fires occurred amid mass protests, with residents expressing anger over the handling of Adriana’s disappearance and subsequent death. Hundreds gathered outside the hotel, some storming the premises, and shortly after, flames engulfed the building. The owner’s residence, located several streets away, was also set on fire as tensions escalated.

Authorities have questioned several individuals, including hotel staff and the owner, as part of a broader investigation into both the fire and the circumstances surrounding Adriana’s death. The government has pledged full support for a transparent and independent inquiry, including bringing in international forensic experts to assist.

As the community awaits answers, the Guyana Fire Service and police continue to urge patience, promising that all findings will be made public once the investigation is complete.
