Guyana stands at a defining crossroads as escalating threats from Venezuela place the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity under immediate and unprecedented pressure. Recent incursions by Venezuelan naval forces into Guyana’s Exclusive Economic Zone and plans by Caracas to hold elections within the Essequibo region have been widely condemned as direct violations of international law and the authority of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Opposition Parliamentarian Jermaine Figueira has issued a clarion call for all Guyanese to set aside political and personal differences and unite in defence of the nation’s land, dignity, and right to exist in peace. “This is not a time for complacency, silence, or division. It is a time for clarity, courage, and decisive national unity,” Figueira declared, urging citizens to rise above partisanship and act with a singular purpose.
The government has reiterated that Guyana will not engage in bilateral negotiations over the disputed territory, emphasizing that the matter is already before the World Court. The ICJ recently ruled in favour of Guyana’s request for provisional measures to prevent Venezuela from altering the status quo or organizing any elections in the contested region, reaffirming the Essequibo as sovereign Guyanese territory.
President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, echoing the call for unity, has stressed that the defence of Guyana’s sovereignty is a patriotic duty that transcends political and social divides. “There has never been a greater moment when we, as Guyanese, need to stand as one to secure the benefits of our natural resources and to protect our sovereignty-the right to make decisions in our national interest-and our territorial integrity,” President Ali stated.
Civil society, political parties, and community leaders have been urged to foster dialogue and solidarity, recognizing that unity is not just an ideal but an existential necessity. Disunity, they warn, risks weakening Guyana’s position on the international stage and emboldening external threats.
As the ICJ continues to deliberate and Venezuela’s provocations persist, Guyana’s leaders and citizens alike are being called to rally behind the national motto: “One people, one nation, one destiny.” The defence of Guyana’s borders and the safeguarding of its future is a collective responsibility-one that demands unwavering resolve, shared purpose, and a united front in the face of adversity.
