Gov’t Pledges Support for Youth Retooling in Guyana’s New Economy – Jagdeo

    Published on

As Guyana’s economy undergoes rapid transformation, Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting the nation’s youth in retooling their skills to meet the demands of emerging sectors. Speaking at a recent press conference and during engagements with university students, Jagdeo stressed that preparing young people for the new economy is a top priority for the administration.

Jagdeo highlighted that the government is actively guiding young people towards high-growth fields such as smart agriculture, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence. He pointed out that while concerns about job losses due to automation and AI are valid globally, Guyana’s expanding economy and small workforce present more opportunities than threats. “With the huge need for labour that will come in the future, we’ll be able to accommodate our people,” he assured.

The Vice President also emphasized the importance of practical, hands-on training alongside academic learning. He advocated for stronger partnerships between educational institutions and the workforce, proposing that final-year university students gain real-world experience through internships in key government departments. Jagdeo lamented that previous offers to integrate such internships into university curricula were not adopted but pledged renewed efforts to make practical training a routine part of higher education.

The government’s strategy extends beyond university education. Tuition at the University of Guyana has been abolished, and the Guyana Online Academy of Learning (GOAL) continues to provide thousands of scholarships for both local and international studies. Technical and vocational training programs are also being expanded, equipping young Guyanese with skills in trades such as electrical installation, welding, and hospitality.

Jagdeo called for a shift in mindset at all levels, urging both institutions and individuals to adapt to the evolving landscape. “If what you train on must be appropriate, you’ve got to make decisions. That’s how it operates around the world. So, mindset changes have to take place at every level, not only at the government, but even the people requiring training,” he said.

Through these initiatives, the government aims to ensure that Guyana’s youth are not only prepared for the jobs of today but are also positioned to lead and innovate in the economy of tomorrow. The administration’s focus on inclusive education and skills development is designed to break cycles of poverty and unlock the full potential of the country’s young population, driving national progress and prosperity.
