Golden Fleece Midwife with Over 1,000 Deliveries Receives Notable Recognition

    Published on

In a moving ceremony marking International Day of the Midwife 2025, Patricia Bridgemohan of Golden Fleece was honored for her extraordinary dedication to maternal and newborn care, having safely delivered over 1,000 babies since the start of her career in 2007.

Bridgemohan, who serves at the Suddie Public Hospital, was presented with a special token of appreciation during the event, which was hosted by the Midwives Association of Guyana in collaboration with the Ministry of Health – Region Two, UNFPA, PAHO, and the International Confederation of Midwives. The celebration, held at the Anna Regina Town Council, brought together healthcare professionals, regional officials, and community members to pay tribute to the essential role of midwives in improving maternal health outcomes.

In addition to Bridgemohan, other outstanding midwives from the region, including Diana Sandy of the Anna Regina Health Centre and Christian Thompson of the Charity Oscar Joseph Hospital, were also recognized for their unwavering commitment and expertise.

Bridgemohan’s career has been marked by compassion, skill, and tireless service-qualities that have earned her the respect and admiration of both colleagues and the wider community. In 2023, she was recognized as the midwife with the highest number of deliveries for the year.

This year’s celebration, themed “Midwives: Critical in Every Crisis,†aimed to highlight the vital contribution of midwives, particularly in under-resourced and rural communities. The programme also advocated for increased investment in midwifery training, infrastructure, and support systems to ensure the highest standards of care for mothers and newborns.

Regional Chairperson Vilma De Silva and Regional Health Officer Dr. Ranjeev Singh both extended their gratitude to the midwives for their invaluable service, reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening the health sector in Region Two.

The recognition of Bridgemohan and her colleagues underscores the crucial impact of skilled midwives in saving lives and uplifting families, especially in communities where access to quality healthcare remains a challenge. Their dedication continues to inspire and drive improvements in maternal and child health across Guyana.
