The Government of Guyana is set to inject $500 million into the East Bank Berbice region as part of a major initiative to revitalize agricultural production and support rural livelihoods. This substantial investment comes at a time when local farmers are already seeing positive results from recent land-clearing and infrastructure projects that have enabled them to return to cultivation after years of inactivity.

Under the new programme, funds will be directed toward expanding land-clearing operations, improving drainage and irrigation systems, and providing essential support services to farmers. The initiative aims to make previously inaccessible or underutilized farmland productive again, helping to restore East Bank Berbice’s reputation as a key agricultural hub.

Farmers in the region have already begun to benefit from government-led land-clearing efforts, which have seen five acres each cleared for dozens of farmers, along with the establishment of vital drainage channels. These interventions have allowed farmers to plant a diverse range of crops, including watermelons, pumpkins, cassava, ginger, and plantains. Many have reported improved incomes and a renewed sense of optimism about the future of farming in the area.

The $500 million injection is expected to further accelerate this progress by enabling more farmers to access cleared land, invest in seeds and equipment, and adopt improved agricultural practices. Community leaders and agricultural committees have praised the government’s commitment, noting that the initiative has already encouraged former residents to return and invest in farming once again.
