Man Charged with Assaulting Sister After Hospital Confrontation

    Published on

A 65-year-old man from Independence, Minnesota, is facing serious charges after allegedly assaulting his sister during a heated dispute at a hospital in Edina earlier this week.

According to police reports, the incident occurred in the hospital room where the siblings were visiting their ailing mother. An argument erupted over power of attorney for their mother, escalating rapidly into violence. Witnesses and court documents state that the man punched his sister multiple times in the head and shoved her into a chair, causing her mouth to bleed.

The situation took a dangerous turn when the man reportedly grabbed his sister’s legally owned firearm during the altercation. He then threatened to shoot her, prompting a brief lockdown at the hospital as law enforcement responded to the emergency. A hospital employee, alerted by the commotion, witnessed the man holding the gun and immediately called 911.

Following the incident, the man fled the hospital but was later apprehended at his home. He told police that he took the gun to “disarm” his sister for safety reasons. Authorities charged him with one count of making threats of violence, a felony, along with two misdemeanor counts of domestic assault.

The accused remains in custody ahead of his court appearance, with bail set at $30,000. The case has drawn attention to the dangers of domestic disputes escalating in public spaces and the critical role of swift law enforcement intervention.
