West Demerara, is undergoing an unprecedented transformation as a wave of massive public and private investments propels the region into a new era of economic growth, infrastructure development, and social progress.
Over the past four years, the government has injected more than $40 billion into the region, targeting critical sectors such as infrastructure, housing, healthcare, education, and energy. This strategic focus is rapidly reshaping Region Three into one of Guyana’s fastest-growing administrative areas, both in population and economic activity.
Housing and Infrastructure Boom
A cornerstone of the region’s development is the accelerated housing programme, with 15,000 new house lots set to be allocated by 2025. This initiative aims to address the housing backlog, enabling thousands of families to build homes and improve their livelihoods. Major road projects, including the Schoonord to Crane highway and the planned four-lane Parika-to-Goshen road, are enhancing connectivity and opening up tens of thousands of acres for agricultural expansion and new communities.
Mega Projects and Industrial Expansion
Region Three is now home to several mega projects reshaping its economic landscape. The Vreed-en-Hoop Shore Base, constructed on reclaimed land, is a critical support hub for Guyana’s offshore oil operations and has attracted over US$700 million in private investment across new ports in Wales, La Grange, Vreed-en-Hoop, and Versailles. The region’s first artificial island and the new Demerara River Crossing further highlight the scale of ongoing development.
The Gas-to-Energy project in Wales stands out as a transformative initiative, set to cut electricity costs by 50% and provide affordable, stable energy for households and industries. This project is already generating jobs and is expected to spur further agro-industrial development and manufacturing growth.
Healthcare, Education, and Social Investment
Significant resources have been directed toward upgrading healthcare and education. The new De Kinderen Regional Hospital, a $6.6 billion facility, will deliver advanced medical care with modern operating theatres, imaging suites, and emergency services. In education, billions have been spent on new schools, supply vouchers for teachers, and textbooks for students, ensuring that the region’s youth are equipped for future opportunities.
Opportunities for All
President Irfaan Ali has emphasized that these investments are designed to benefit all Guyanese, from small entrepreneurs to large investors. The government’s wealth creation model includes co-investment opportunities in projects like the upcoming fertilizer factory and the national gas company, enabling ordinary citizens to participate directly in the region’s economic success.
Special investment zones with tax-free incentives are also being established, aiming to triple foreign investment and attract new ventures in healthcare, agriculture, oil and gas, and manufacturing.
