    Published on

A 37-year-old Queenstown resident, David Joseph, known as ‘Naiya’, was sentenced to two years in prison on Thursday after being found guilty of larceny. The sentencing followed a conviction for stealing from Poonraj Lachman, a supervisor at Caricom Rice Mill and resident of Lot 67 Queenstown Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

The incident occurred on February 1, 2025, at Lachman’s residence. According to a police statement, Joseph was apprehended and subsequently faced trial at the Suddie Magistrate’s Court. Due to his incarceration, Joseph appeared before Magistrate Tamieka Clarke via Zoom from Lusignan Prison.

The case underscores the ongoing efforts by local authorities to address property crimes in the Essequibo region. Joseph’s conviction and sentencing send a clear message about the legal consequences of larceny, as law enforcement continues to pursue justice for victims of theft.

No further details about the stolen items or the circumstances of the theft were disclosed by authorities.
